MediaTek Announces MT9638 AI Chipset for Next Generation 4K Smart TV

MediaTek, a Taiwanese chipset manufacturer, is the market leader in smart TV chips. The company offers a wide range of TV chips, from entry-level to flagship smart TVs.

MediaTek has expanded its portfolio today with the release of a new Chipset - MediaTek MT9638. Chipset dedicated to the next generation of 4K premium smart TVs , comes with a built-in Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit (APU).

It uses a multi-core setup of ARM Coretex-A55 CPU cores along with an ARM Mali-G52 GPU. The company has yet to reveal the exact number of CPU cores, but it will most likely be a quad-core cluster.

This new chipset also packs some impressive features such as variable refresh rate (VRR) support, motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC), HDMI 2.1 and HDR10 +, among others.

As for the display, it supports resolutions up to 4K at 60Hz and supports HEVC, VP9 and AV1 decoding. For connection, it supports Wi-Fi 6, HDMI 2.1, USB 3.0 standards. There is also support for Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X surround sound for an immersive audio experience.

With built-in artificial intelligence, TV manufacturers using this chip can offer features such as automatically adjusting settings such as color, saturation, brightness, sharpness, and others to enhance picture quality.

There is also support for voice recognition and virtual assistants. It supports up to 4 far-field microphones with ultra-low standby power consumption, and the company also offers a one-second summary for hot words.

MediaTek reported that smart TVs 4K based on this new MT9638 chipset should appear in the second quarter of this year.
