How to download and install the Google Play Store

Sometimes you need to install the Play Store manually. Regardless of whether you deleted it by accident, or you want to return to the previous version, or even if your Google Play store is not working, and you just want to install a new version, there is a solution!

1. Check the current version of Google Play

Updates are time consuming and do not arrive simultaneously on all Android devices. That's why sometimes you might want to download and install a newer version of the Google Play Store, especially if your current version is causing you problems.

However, before rushing to download the latest version of the Play Store APK, first check which version of the Play Store app is currently installed. Here's how to do it:

    • Go to SettingThen Applications and notifications
    • Find Google Play and touch it (you may have to click on See All Applications )
    • Click on Advanced and scroll to the very end where you will see the version number

If your Google Play application is working fine and the only reason you download content is because you are impatient, you can also check the version of the application in the Play Store application itself. Open it, click on the three lines (burger menu button) in the upper left corner, go to Setting and scroll to the end to see the exact number.

Google Play Store Version Number Explanations

The version numbering system of the Google Play Store at first may seem a little confusing, but easy to figure out. If the jumps between numbers seem weird, it's simply because Google has not published intermediate versions.

Please note that the following guide is for owners of an Android device with a licensed version of the Play Store installed. We understand that sometimes it is necessary to reinstall or roll back the Play Store app.

3. Install the Google Play Store

The easiest way to install the Play Store will already be familiar to you if you are an avid follower of this site: just download and install the Play Store APK manually. APK is the Android equivalent of the .exe file (.dmg on Mac) on your computer.

Instead of downloading the app from the Google Play Store, you simply install it yourself without the help of the Play Store. We even have a helpful guide to help you:

This, of course, is very useful when the application you want to install is the Play Store itself. There are two ways to install the Google Play APK on your device: directly on your smartphone or through a computer. First we make the easy way.

Installing the Google Play store from a smartphone

For older versions of Android (before Oreo), you just need to go to the settings menu and allow installation from unknown sources, and then open the link to the site above. You will be asked to allow download and installation. APKMirror is a safe source so you can click Yes .

toggle the "Install unknown apps" switch
If you receive this message, you will need to toggle the "Install unknown applications" switch

On Android Oreo and above, such as Pie and Android 10, manually installing the Google Play app is a little more difficult. Here's what you need to do:

  • Go to Setting and find Applications and notifications. In the application menu, scroll down until you find your mobile browser - for example, Google Chrome.
  • Click in the browser and scroll down to the section Advanced. There you will find Install unknown applications. Open and select - Allow from this source. You can disable this option after you're done.
search in the Settings menu to find the setting you want
Remember that you can always search in the Settings menu to find the setting you want.
  • Using a browser on your device, go to the site XDA Developers or APK Mirrorto download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • You may receive a warning message - "This type of file may damage your device." Ignore this (trust us) and click OK.
  • Open the APK (you can click the completed download in the notification menu), read the new permissions (if any) that the new version of the Play Store is requesting, then click Install.
Enable unknown sources
Turning on unknown sources can be intimidating, but you can turn it off at any time.

Installing the Google Play Store using a computer

If you don't have mobile internet or Wi-Fi connection on your device, you can download the Play Store APK app on your computer instead. The same process applies, but you'll need a file manager app installed on your smartphone if your device doesn't come with a file manager preinstalled.

  • Download a third-party file management application if you don’t have one - for example, FX File Explorer. Allow him to install applications from unknown sources by following the same steps as described for your mobile browser.
  • Using a browser on your computer, go to XDA Developer Forum or APK Mirrorto download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable and copy the APK to your Android device.
  • Find the APK using your file manager.
  • Launch the APK, accept the permissions and click Install.
  • Remember to remove installation permissions from unknown sources from your file management application if you are not going to download additional APKs.

Once you've reinstalled the Google Play Store app, you don't have to worry about having to manually download each new version again. As soon as there is a newer version than the one you downloaded, the Google Play app will automatically update. However, if you're still having issues, it's time to troubleshoot.

4. Troubleshooting the Google Play Store

The Google Services Framework is an essential service that allows the Play Store to interact with the apps on your device, allowing automatic updates and system functions. If these features stop working or you experience other problems, there may be a problem with the service. In such a case, you must clear the cache on both the Google Play Store and Google Play Services. For this:

  • Go to Setting > Applications and notifications
  • Scroll down to Google Play Storeclick it then click Storage and cache, and then - Clear cache.
  • Do the same for Google Play Services
  • This should solve most of the problems you will encounter in the Google Play Store.

Note: Depending on what device you have, rights may be required Root to install the Google Play Store manually, but that's another instruction.

Each version of the Play Store can add or remove features.
