Huawei Exec: Harmony OS Reaches 70-80% Android Level

Back in 2019, the US government put in place new regulations that cut Huawei's Android support to Google. Since then, the company has been working on its own proprietary operating system called Harmony OS (HongMeng in China), which has now apparently reached 70-80 percent of the Android .

The Chinese tech giant is also poised for other worst-case scenarios, according to Yu Chendong, CEO of Consumer BG Huawei. As Harmony's OS level approaches the level of Android systems, the company could deploy it to its smartphones to replace Android if the US completely banned Chinese companies from using Android. In other words, the operating system is almost complete, and its ecosystem can compete and replace Google on a global scale in its offerings.

In addition, the senior official also said that in case Huawei faces a complete ban on Google's software, it will now be able to supply their operating system. The operating system isn't just for smartphones, as Yu Chandong said it will ship in future Huawei tablets, PCs and other devices. This means that it will create a cross-platform OS similar to the Apple ecosystem that many people know and love today.

The official believes the initial ban the company faced did not spark panic and crisis back in 2019, but led to greater impact on its consumer business, for which he is responsible. He also mentioned that the second round of sanctions was even more unfounded and "disastrous" for the company. Comparing Huawei's current predicament with the real estate example. Since the company is not allowed to use construction equipment, it will have to make its own in order to survive in the industry.
