Alleged Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 SoC spotted on Geekbench

Earlier this month, Roland Quandt of WinFuture.de said that Qualcomm is working on the next generation Snapdragon 8cx processor internally named SC8280 with the aim of replacing Apple M1 chip ... Today, the third-generation chipset could appear in Geekbench benchmarks.

In the listing Geekbench 5 shows a test sample of a device codenamed "Qualcomm QRD". The device has a processor labeled "Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3". This is an eight-core chipset with a base frequency of 2,69 GHz.

This is in line with Roland's report, which said the chipset would be clocked at 2,7GHz. That is, if it is a 8rd generation 4cx, then it will have 2,7 Gold + cores clocked at 4 GHz and 2,43 Gold cores clocked at XNUMX GHz.

Be that as it may, the listing shows that the device scored 982 points in the single-core category and 4918 points in the multi-core categories. According to a Notebookcheck report, these results only match 56% of the performance of the Apple M1. While overall performance has improved, it looks like Qualcomm still requires a lot of work with Apple.

However, this particular benchmark is not necessarily validated as a Snapdragon 8cx 8rd generation chipset, although it does have an "ARMvXNUMX" ID on it. And even if this is the one, the sample may be a prototype, so let's wait for the official data on the characteristics.

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx chipset is said to be used primarily in Windows laptops, including 2-in-1 machines. It will likely have a built-in AI-based task processing NPU with up to 15 TOP (trillion operations) performance.

All of this hints at a competitive version of Qualcomm, and only time will tell if it will raise the stakes and play a tug-of-war against its rivals in 2021.
