Electric vehicle sales in China to grow more than 50% in 2021: report

A new report says that sales of electric vehicles in China are expected to grow more than 50 percent, despite modest sales a year ago. The news comes as the Chinese market grew just 2020 percent year-on-year in 8, while the global market grew 39 percent over the same period.

According to the report Canalys1,3 million electric vehicles were shipped to the Chinese market alone last year. The impressive sales figures are likely due to the Chinese government's actions to support the market, although recent policy changes related to electric vehicles have also forced automakers to struggle to maintain and increase sales in the region. According to Chris Jones, chief analyst at Canalys, “The Chinese RV market in 2020 consisted of two vehicles: China's Tesla Model 3, the market leader in the first half of 2020, and the Hongguang Mini EV from the SGMW joint venture. ... "

Notably, the 1,3 million electric vehicles sold in China last year also represent 41 percent of global electric vehicle sales, just under 42 percent of global sales from Europe. Meanwhile, the US also accounted for 2,4 percent of total sales. Jones also added that "China has a great network of standardized EV chargers, good government support, and now a return to strong consumer demand."

Canalys predicts that 2021 million electric vehicles will be delivered to the Chinese market in 1,9, representing 51 percent growth in the local market and 9 percent growth in the electric vehicle market of China's total auto market. Sandy Fitzpatrick, Vice President of Canalys, said: “With just 6,3% of all passenger cars sold in China in 2020, electric vehicles still have many years to go. But as Tesla expands its portfolio in Chihna, it will be difficult for competitors offering premium EVs to gain market share.
