Internet Channels Dominated Indian Smartphone Market With A 48% Share In 2020: IDC

Research firm Counterpoint recently released a report on 2020 smartphone shipments to India. It is reported that over 150 million smartphones were shipped last year. Likewise, IDC has released its own version and claims that online channels have outstripped the entire market.

First, the report says that in the fourth quarter of 2020, that is, from October to December, India recorded 45 million shipments, up 21% year-on-year. This, although less than 54,3 million shipments in the third quarter, creates good conditions for 2021. 2020 kicked off with brand stops, lack of demand, and more, the report says.

However, after the second half of 2021, the demand for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops has grown thanks to the increased use of online learning programs. Anyway, towards the end, Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, realme, OPPO shipped 12, 7,7, 7,6, 5,2, 5,1 million units in the fourth quarter, respectively. Thereby Xiaomi holds first place with a whopping 27% market share

Indian Smartphone Market - Online Channel Dominance in 2020

However, it is worth noting that Samsung rose 35% YoY in the fourth quarter. If we take the total smartphone market for 2020, the report says that online channels (e-commerce on the internet) in India grew 12% YoY and captured 48% of the total share in 2020. In particular, during sales on Diwali, the online segment occupied 51%, while the offline segment grew by 5% y / y in the 4th quarter.

Xiaomi, which has shipped only 41 million devices, leads the Indian market with a share of 27%, together with POCO and also operated the online arena with a 39% share. Samsung will also try its hand at developing Galaxy-M & F devices. It grew 65% YoY online, but didn't make an impression offline (28% drop). Overall, 29,7 million units were shipped, down 4% in 2020.

Other companies such as Vivo, realme, OPPO shipped 26,7, 19,2 and 16,5 million units, respectively. As always, Vivo has overthrown Samsung to dominate the offline market with a 30% share thanks to its Y-series devices. While Realme has surpassed OPPO overall, it has failed to win the title in the online arena.

Finally, Transsion brands such as Infinix, Tecno, Itel, contributed to the growth, as their share in the network was 64%. Unfortunately, Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), is in 7th place, despite the fact that in 2020 the growth was 93% y / y

Prospects for 5G smartphones in 2021

As for processors, then MediaTek unexpectedly leads the chipset arena with a 43% share, while Qualcomm takes 40%. It's a little obvious that phones under $ 200 have helped the Taiwanese giant grow even more in 2020.

With 3 million shipments in 2020, the 5G market will reach a fast-paced phase this year. Brands are expected to launch aggressive marketing campaigns and launch 5G devices at varying prices, although India's 5G rollout is still a long way off.
