Smartphones these days have minimal bezels. Consequently, the anterior chamber either fits into the notch or the hole. Future phones are expected to even have an under-display camera. But OnePlus recently patented a smartphone design with a long-forgotten selfie camera.
OnePlus Technology (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd. In mid-2020, filed a patent with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) entitled "Display Device". This patent was approved and published on February 4, 2021.
As usual, he was first noticed LetsGoDigital and the post even created a nice render for it based on the design of future OnePlus 9 и OnePlus 9 Pro .
According to patent documents, this smartphone design includes a front-facing camera in the upper thin bezel. This way, users won't be distracted like on notch and punch-hole phones.
In addition, the patent documents indicate that this solution is inexpensive than digging a hole in the display panel. Because production costs are low and profitability and reliability are high. Hence, it could be a better alternative to not only notches and holes, but also under-display technology.
At the moment, we cannot say for sure if OnePlus will release a smartphone with this type of selfie camera placement. But chances are there are pros and cons to on-screen cameras besides being expensive.
Last but not least, it's worth noting that Meizu already used a similar construction for Meizu 16s Pro и Meizu 16T... However, the bezels were slightly thicker than in this design patent.
