According to LetsGoDigital Samsung Electronics filed a patent titled “Electronic Device Including Camera Module” with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) in mid-2020. This patent was approved and published on January 14th.

This design patent showcases the swing out camera module. According to the documentation, a module can have at least three cameras. In the normal state, all these sensors are facing backward.

But in selfie mode and video calls, this cylindrical module will pivot to face the front of the phone and pop slightly out of the phone body to reveal a single sensor at the top. The documentation also mentions the ability to reveal a second sensor by lifting the module even further.

This system uses an engine, two gears and a long driveshaft. It also includes a movable frame that slides into free space when the camera module is lifted. This frame houses a flexible PCB.

That being said, we don't expect Samsung to launch a commercial smartphone with this solution. Because it sounds more fragile than a regular pop-up camera system. However, the above renders were created by Jermaine Smith ( Concept Creator ) for LetsGoDigital.
