Apple to use "hybrid OLED displays on iPad from 2022": report

Back in November, a report said Apple plans to bring mini LED and OLED to iPad by 2021. However, an update from several analysts revealed that the iPad will only have OLED displays by 2022. Now, a report from Korea has more details on the display technologies coming to the iPad.

According to the report , Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), made the decision to introduce OLED to iPad from 2022. In fact, she has already sent inquiries to suppliers such as Samsung Display [19459003] and Display LG... What's interesting is the new OLED technology that Apple is reportedly going to use.

More precisely, Apple will use "hybrid OLED" displays on the 2022 iPad. They are said to be thinner than conventional OLED displays. Samsung will reportedly start shipping these panels in 2022, with LG Display joining a year later. A source for the report says that Samsung has already begun to take the necessary steps to do this.

Also, if the other source is correct, Apple will use the Samsung panel on one model iPad in 2022. After that, both Samsung and LG will start full-scale shipments from 2023. Speaking of which, hybrid OLED panels will reportedly be a combination of flexible and rigid OLED. Basically, these terms refer to the rigid (glass) or flexible substrates used.

The latter is obviously about 3 times more expensive than a hard OLED and can withstand more impacts. In any case, the new panel from both companies will have a rigid glass substrate (TFT-Thin Film Transistor). On top of that, it is said to be applied with TFE (thin film encapsulation) technology.

Simply put, TFE is used in flexible OLED s to reduce overall thickness without compromising rigidity. Samsung calls it UT (Ultra Thin) panel and LG calls it ATO (Advanced Thin OLED).

Anyway, after a lot of rumors, it looks like the 2022 iPads will be the first to use OLED displays. Alternatively, you can take a look at changing the display of his product portfolio below:

  • Apple's first AMOLED product is Apple Watch 2015.
  • The first iPhone with an OLED screen iPhone X (2017)
  • Current Apple Watch - use LGD flexible OLED screen (2020)
  • First mini-LED MacBook - 14 inches (rumored 2021)
  • First OLED iPad -Expected-2022.

However, rumors aside, Apple's transition from LCD to LED technology has been a smooth and well thought out strategy since 2015. In addition, the report also mentions Apple's possibility of using mini-LEDs on the iPad in 2021. It is basically a film of backlit LEDs on a liquid crystal layer (LCD).
