MIUI 12.5 Enhanced will not be released for these Redmi devices; MIUI 13 may still arrive

Xiaomi MIUI 12 has had one of the longest periods in MIUI history. Last year there was a major update that brought new features and visual changes over MIUI 11. However, the update also brought a lot of stability and performance issues, so the company pushed forward additional updates to iron out those issues. In early 2021, the brand announced MIUI 12.5 as a gradual update to the original software. Earlier this year, we expected MIUI 13 to be released, but were once again surprised by another additional update in the form of MIUI 12.5 Enhanced.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 was unveiled in August and some reports suggested the debut of MIUI 13 along with the phone. However, at the time of its release, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun revealed that MIUI 13 was not ready and needed further refinement. So the solution was to provide a new full screen smartphone with an improved version of the available software, hence it came with MIUI 12.5 Enhanced.

Interestingly, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced was not exclusive to the flagship and has been available on several smartphones since its debut. Several devices have received the new update, but some are still waiting for this patch. Today, the wait for some users will end as the update may not arrive at all. Three months after the software debut, Xiaomi announced that the update will not be available for some Redmi smartphones.

According to the Telegram channel Mi Fans Home Xiaomi has canceled the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update for the following phones:

  • Redmi Note 7, Note 7 Pro and Note 7S
  • Y3
  • Redmi 7 and 7A

The same post also states that the new MIUI version will not reach the Xiaomi Mi A3. This is not surprising since the device runs the standard Android OS as it is part of the Android One program. Interestingly, the Mi A3 has become the latest and most controversial smartphone to qualify for the Android One program.

The MIUI 13 update could still be rolled out for these devices

Curiously, Xiaomi has canceled MIUI 12 for Redmi 7 and Redmi Y3 in the past. Regardless, Redmi 7 received MIUI 12 and even MIUI 12.5. The latter did not get access to any of the versions. However, some of these devices may end up getting the latest update, or maybe they'll get MIUI 13 instead.

Xiaomi is expected to unveil MIUI 13 next month alongside MIUI 13. The new software should arrive alongside Android 12 for several smartphones. However, some of them may run Android 11 as this has never been an issue for the Chinese brand. That said, we wouldn't be surprised if some older devices get the MIUI 13 update. Of course, if you own any of the above smartphones, don't hold your breath over it.
