Smartphones with Samsung 200MP sensor may appear soon

Due to the fact that the launch of the series Samsung Galaxy S21 just around the corner, the high-end Ultra variant is expected to have an updated version of last year's 108MP sensor. Although the company is apparently also working on a 200MP sensor, which may soon appear in future flagship launches.

According to the tweet of the famous leak author @ IceUniverse, the South Korean tech giant plans to launch a new innovative sensor this year. These new sensors will also be part of the ISOCELL family and will include a 200MP image sensor. We previously reported that Samsung is working on a 600MP smartphone image sensor, although a 200MP leak seems much more likely at this point and should come sooner.

Back in March 2020, there were rumors that the company would release a new 150MP sensor by the last quarter of last year. Although that launch never happened, and another report said Samsung is now also working on a 250MP sensor. Keep in mind that camera performance on smartphones isn't just about megapixels. Software optimization and machine learning also play an important role.

But the hardware is still just as important: the higher-megapixel sensor offers Samsung broader applications in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, IoT, drones, and automotive. Unfortunately, it's too early to tell if the company is actually working on such a sensor, so we'll have to wait for further reports and rumors or even an official announcement to know for sure. So stay tuned.
