Dimensity 2000 may not be the real name of MediaTek's upcoming SoC flagship

A few years ago MediaTek stuck in limbo with little or nothing to do with Qualcomm and its chipsets. The company's chips could only be found on smartphones from small Chinese brands. After unsuccessful attempts to enter the flagship market, such as the Helio X10 or X30 chips that tried to make a name for themselves with a deca-core architecture, the brand decided to rethink its strategies. In 2019, we saw the brand return with the SoC Helio G90T. It was a very good mid-range chipset. However, a major overhaul came in 2020 when the brand unveiled the 5G Dimensity line of chipsets. The brand is gearing up for its true return to the flagship segment next year with the Dimensity 2000 SoC. However, the tipster claims that this is not the real name of the upcoming flagship SoC.

Dimensity 2000 is not the real name of MediaTek's flagship SoC

MediaTek has achieved great popularity with its Dimensity line. After all, while Qualcomm was selling its 5G chips as something for the "premium" segment, MediaTek has managed to offer mid to low-end 5G chips. The brand expanded its game this year with Dimensity 1200 and DIme density 1100 SoCs. The chips were made on the 6nm architecture, which is one step behind Qualcomm, Samsung and Apple. Regardless, the chip has won acclaim from many brands who have used it in their flagship killer smartphones and premium mid-range smartphones. Meanwhile, the availability of mid-range and low-end 5G chips continued to rise. Today MediaTek is the largest chipset manufacturer with the largest market share. Full of confidence, the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer is ready to compete in the flagship segment.

MediaTek Dimensity 2000

The next generation chipset will target the 4nm architecture and will include ARM Cortex-X2 cores, A710 cores, and A510 cores. This configuration is similar to the offerings from Samsung and Qualcomm. The main difference is that MediaTek will rely on TSMC's 4nm manufacturing process.

MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is MediaTek's new flagship SoC

Today a trusted analyst at Ice Universe uncovered via Twitter post that MediaTek's next-generation chip will be known as Dimensity 9000 and not Dimensity 2000. Interestingly, this is happening at the same time that the next - Qualcomm - Generation chip will bring a different name. Instead of the Snapdragon 898, it may be nicknamed Snapdragon 8 Gen1 (yes, that name sucks). Given Ice Universe's good reputation, we have good reason to believe its claims. Moreover, it makes sense, especially when the Dimensity 1200 is not a chipset that competes with the SD888 or Exynos 2100. MediaTek wants to make sure its future chip looks like a major upgrade over the Dimensity 1200.

Using a different name for its flagship SoC also allows MediaTek to retain the DIme density 2000 naming for anything beyond the Dimensity 1200 SoC. Time will show.

While all three flagship SoCs from 2022 will use a similar architecture, the difference could be in the GPU configuration. Samsung will use AMD's mobile GPU, Qualcomm will use the Adreno 730. MediaTek is rumored to be using the Mali G710 MC10. According to rumors, this GPU will lose out to its competitors. However, only real use will tell if there is a difference between the trio of flagship SoCs. The fact does not matter, many brands will be using the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC next year, further expanding the company's presence in the smartphone market.
