In a poster announcing the phone's release date, the company touted the upcoming smartphone series as "Leap Forward," which may hint at the chipset that powers the devices - Huawei Kirin 9000 SoC, which is built on a 5nm process technology. It could also be the company's last flagship chipset for now due to US sanctions.

Reports indicate that the phone may have a display design similar to that of the Huawei P40 Pro, and so it could be equipped with a pill-shaped curved OLED display, a selfie camera, as well as a TOF 3D sensor for face unlocking.

The devices will run the latest EMUI 11 user interface, likely based on the Android 11 operating system. However, reports indicate that the standard Mate 40 may ship with EMUI 10.1 instead of the latest version.
