Google Hires Intel Veteran to Lead Specialty Chips Division

In recent years, more and more large firms have been working on creating their own chipsets. Now Google hired a veteran Intelto lead the ASIC division.

According to the report TechCrunch, the search engine giant has hired Intel CEO Uri Frank as vice president of its custom chip division. According to Amin Wahdat, Google Research Fellow and VP of Systems Infrastructure, “The future of cloud infrastructure is bright and changing rapidly. As we continue to work towards meeting computing needs from around the world, today we are delighted to welcome Uri Frank as our VP of Server Chip Development. ”

By hiring Frank, the company had an employee with experience in the chip industry. Uri worked at Intel for two decades, going from a simple engineer to corporate vice president of the Design Engineering Group. Frank will now head the Israel division of Google. For those who don't know, the company created its own chips back in 2015 and is now ramping up efforts in that direction.

He went on to add that “Google has designed and built some of the largest and most efficient computer systems in the world. For a long time, custom chips have been an important part of this strategy. I look forward to joining my team here in Israel and accelerating Google Cloud innovation in computing infrastructure. " In other words, Frank's job is to take Google's custom chip to the next level.
