Samsung is the world's leading smartphone brand - Apple moves into second place -

TrendForce's latest market performance report shows that total global smartphone production in the third quarter was around 325 million units. However, growth rates and overall performance are not as good as in the same period last year. In fact, this year's performance is worse than it was in 2019 before the pandemic. To this end, TrendForce has lowered its annual production forecast for 2021 to 1,335 billion units, representing a 6,5% annual growth rate. Compared to previous estimates of an annual growth of 7,3% to 1,345 billion units, the main reason is that supply chain performance is being affected by chip shortages. However, Samsung remains the leading smartphone manufacturer in the world.

Samsung

According to the report, Samsung produced 69 million units in the third quarter, up 17,9% from the previous quarter. This is mainly due to the stabilization of the Vietnamese factories of the brand. In the third quarter, Apple released four new iPhone 13 series models. However, their strong performance will not matter much in the third quarter. Thus, Apple should be content with the second place after Samsung. Apple's production for the quarter was 51,5 million units, up 22,6%. In the third, fourth and fifth positions, respectively, Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo.

Chinese manufacturers rank third to fifth

OPPO produced 51 million units in the third quarter, up 3% from the previous quarter, ranking third globally. Xiaomi (including Redmi, Poco and Black Shark) produced 44,5 million devices in the third quarter, ranking fourth globally with a 10% quarterly decline. Vivo (including iQOO), the fifth largest in the world, has about the same performance as last quarter. The production volume is about 34 million units.

In terms of market share, Samsung is well ahead of it with a market share of 21,2%. Apple, in second place, has 15,9% of the market. It is just 0,2% ahead of Oppo's third place with a 15,7% market share. Xiaomi is ranked fourth with a market share of 13,7%, while Vivo is fifth with a market share of 10,5%.

A recent report from Counterpoint Research shows that for the first time in six years, Apple has become the number one brand in China. Apple surpassed Vivo in October 2021 to become the largest smartphone maker in the Chinese market. In terms of product planning, in addition to maintaining four new phones in the second half of the year, Apple will launch the third-generation iPhone SE at the end of the first quarter. This device is likely to be a good weapon for Apple in the mid-range 5G market.
