Huawei has patented a smartphone design with interchangeable zoom lens

Huawei has produced some of the best camera phones every year since its partnership with Leica. We're at half past three in 2020, but the P40 Pro still leads the DxOMark camera chart. The versatile optical zoom camera setup on this phone proves that it is one of the best on the market. Now, according to the patent filed by the company, it has big ambitions to continue to lead the way in smartphone scaling technology.

Huawei Attachable Zoom Lens Design Patent Featured

Huawei P40 Plus is currently the only smartphone that offers 10x optical zoom using a periscope lens. The company has further plans to lead in this segment, as it has patented a project for a smartphone with a unique zoom camera in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

The Pericope lens offers optical zoom on phones, using less space than a conventional zoom system. But it still lags behind traditional zoom technology with large sensors and lenses.

Huawei seeks to fix this by adding support for attachable lenses, like conventional cameras. This particular design patent seems to have a triple camera setup consisting of two smaller sensors, an extended flash module (Xeon?), And a larger sensor that can be used with removable lenses.

In addition, the design of the phone is shown in black with a textured rear panel for capture. There is also a USB Type-C port, a power key, and a volume rocker.

However, Huawei will not be the first to offer an attachable camera lens as Motorola has already tried it out with a non-working Moto Mod. In any case, it's not clear if this design patent will see the light of day like many other patents.
